Cabbage microgreens are a fantastic choice for any beginner. They are quick, reliable, and produce a high yield with a mild, fresh, and slightly sweet flavor. They are the perfect base for any microgreen mix!
Here is your straightforward guide to growing a full Farmer You Kitchen Kit of these easy-to-grow greens.
Step 1: Prep & Sow
Data Point | Cabbage |
Seed Weight per Kitchen Kit | 10 Grams |
Needs Pre-Soak? | No |
Optimal Germination Temp | 60 to 75 degrees F |
Prepare the Tray: Place an 8x8 germination pad in the kitchen kit tray and fully saturate the pad, draining off excess water.
Skip the Soak: Cabbage seeds are from the Brassica family and do not require pre-soaking.
Sow the Seeds: Evenly broadcast 10 grams of dry cabbage seeds across the surface of the growing medium. Cabbage is one of the seeds that benefits from a medium-dense planting.
Mist: Lightly mist the sown seeds to help settle them and start germination.
Step 2: Blackout & Weighting
Blackout and weighting is not a necessary step with the Farmer You Kitchen Kit, but it can lead to increased productivity. If you wish to forgo the blackout and weighting, simply place the germination cover over your tray until the seeds have sprouted.
Data Point | Cabbage |
Weighted Days | 2–3 |
Blackout Days | 3–4 |
Notes on Germination | Generally quick and uniform; keep warm and moist. |
Apply Weight (Days 1–3): Place a second tray (or some other flat waterproof object) directly on top of the seeds. Place a weight (5 lbs) on the top tray for 2–3 days. This pressure is important for rooting the seedlings deeply and encouraging sturdy, uniform growth.
Continue Blackout (Days 3–4): After removing the weight, keep the trays stacked or covered in a dark spot for a total of 3–4 days until the seedlings are about 1 inch tall.
Monitor Temperature: Maintain the ideal germination temperature of 60 to 70 degrees F; consistent moisture and warmth aid in quick and uniform sprouting.
Step 3: Grow & Water
Data Point | Cabbage |
Other Tips | Great beginner microgreen. High yield potential. |
Introduce Light: Once the seedlings have reached about an inch in height, move them under a grow light or into a bright windowsill. They will quickly turn vibrant green.
Watering: Switch entirely to bottom watering. Water by adding a small amount of water to the sides of the tray and letting the grow pad wick the moisture up. This keeps the delicate leaves dry, preventing mold and damping off.
Airflow: Like most microgreens, providing good airflow with a small fan will help produce stronger stems and mitigate mold risk.
Step 4: Harvest
Data Point | Cabbage |
Days Until Harvest | 8–12 |
Timing: Your Cabbage microgreens will be ready for harvest in a quick 8–12 days.
Look for Cotyledons: Harvest when the cotyledons (the first pair of small, oval leaves) are fully developed and green, but before the true leaves (which look like miniature cabbage leaves) start to form.
Cut: Use a sharp knife or clean scissors, cutting the shoots just above the root level.
With the MagniMoist pad, harvesting is a breeze! Simply hold the pad vertically above a bowl and allow the greens to fall into the bowl as you cut along the stems.
Enjoy your fresh, crisp, and high-yielding Cabbage microgreens!
